Tâmbourine was born into a musical family with deep religious roots. Her father was a member of the renowned 1960s Gospel group, The Kelley Brothers, and he encouraged the family's musical talents by forming a family band with Tâmbourine and her 5 siblings. Tâmbourine was a very shy child and was reluctant to sing. However, as a teenager she found she had a love for Opera, joined the All City Chorus in Chicago and performed with them at Orchestra Hall, taking first place in their competition. This experience helped to instill a deep love of music.
Tâmbourine grew up in a Christian household and she was greatly influenced by her father, a Pastor, her mother, a Prophetess, and her grandmother, a Bishop. She had an especially close relationship to her grandmother who sang and also played the tambourine, which is how she decided to take the name. When Tâmbourine’s father passed she fought depression, rebelled and turned from God. She became pregnant at the age of 16. Shortly after the birth of her child, her mother turned her out on the street along with her baby, stating she reminded her mother too much of her father. She was homeless, living with her baby in shelters and sleeping on couches at friends homes.
During this time of depression and homelessness, trying to figure out what to do, she reflected on how the nurses that attended her father, in the hospital as he battled cancer, touched her life. She realized that during her father’s illness she had felt helpless with no way to help her father, and realized she never wanted to feel that helplessness again. She heard a calling on her life to help others through nursing so she could be the one that helped hurting people.
Even though she was homeless and with a baby, through the help of a “guardian angel,” she was able to register for nursing school. Her road during this time was extremely difficult, but with the support of her guardian angel she was able to persevere, complete her schooling, and become a registered nurse. After getting her degree she found a job and was able to get into her first apartment, feeling she had accomplished what she had set out to do, provide a home for her son.
Tâmbourine was working as a nurse and taking care of her son when tragedy struck. Her son was diagnosed with a rare life-threatening blood disease. This brought her to her knees. Because of her upbringing she knew the only way to victory was through Jesus Christ and she began her journey back to Christ. The long term prognosis for her son was grim, but during this time she was able to continue working, thanks to her guardian angel, and save enough money to purchase her first real home. She vowed that her son would have the best of everything while he was on this earth. A time came when they were not certain if her son would live and her entire church prayed over him. She witnessed a miracle when God answered their prayers and her son improved. This inspired her to write the song “Oh God.”
Tâmbourine has been blessed with a second son who was diagnosed with Autism and she has survived 2 abusive relationships. However, because of her deep belief in God and with many prayers, she has persevered, escaping the treacherous road of abuse, becoming the strong mother, wife, singer/songwriter and woman that she is today.
The road that Tâmbourine has walked - homelessness, single parenting, abusive relationships, children with life threatening disease and Autism - has brought her to this place. She has a strong relationship with God and a calling to use her gift of music to minister to hurting and battered souls. She has drawn on her experiences to become a vessel to be used to reach out to those in need. She is a creative singer-songwriter, and drummer with a voice that reaches the heavens. Her first single release, “I Believe,” scheduled for a February 2021 release, is an inspirational tribute to our Nation and its healing process. Her first full CD, “Find You” is scheduled to release Fall 2021. This CD is filled with songs that touch the heart and offer encouragement that God will never leave or forsake you. Tâmbourine knows that we need to trust in Him in everything, for only He knows the way out of difficult situations.
No weapon formed against thee shall prosper, and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.”
Isaiah 54:17
